2013 Hugo Awards Replay Available

The complete, uninterrupted 2013 Hugo Awards Ceremony is now available for replay on Ustream.

The original live broadcast on September 1, 2013 was adversely affected by technical problems with LoneStarCon 3’s equipment. The problems were not with the Marriott’s internet feed or with Ustream itself, and LoneStarCon 3 has apologized for not being able to provide the live feed as intended. However, you can now watch the entire event the way it unfolded live in San Antonio.

2013 Hugo Ceremony Recording in Preparation

LoneStarCon 3 posted on it’s website earlier today the following announcement:

LoneStarCon 3 apologizes for the interruptions to the live broadcast of the 2013 Hugo Awards Ceremony. These problems were caused by issues with the convention’s equipment that caused failures in the feed to Ustream. LoneStarCon 3 wishes to make it clear that these technical difficulties were in no way due to Ustream Inc or the Marriott hotel, who have both provided excellent support throughout this year’s event.

LoneStarCon 3 has retained the master data for the broadcast and we expect to upload this within 1-2 weeks to enable fans around the world to appreciate the ceremony in full.

We will announce here when the full recording of the Hugo Awards ceremony is made available.

Hugo Awards Ceremony Tonight

The Hugo Awards will be announced tonight at a ceremony at LoneStarCon 3, the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, in San Antonio, Texas. The ceremony is scheduled to start at 8 PM CDT. We’ll be on the air around 7:45 PM with our live text-based coverage of the awards ceremony. The window to our call of the ceremony is below.

Live video coverage of the ceremony will be on the Hugo Awards UStream Channel. We’ve been reassured that Ustream has “whitelisted” the broadcast and is fully aware of the planned event, so expect no repetition of the unfortunate interruption that affected last years’s broadcast.

Note that the video and text-only coverage streams are not synchronized, and based on past experience, are likely to get out of synch with each other.

2013 Hugo Trophy Unveiled

The design of the 2013 Hugo Award trophy was unveiled during the Opening Ceremonies of LoneStarCon 3, the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, on the evening of August 29. In keeping with recent practice, LoneStarCon 3 elected to showcase the trophy early in the convention so that members could see it before the final night of Worldcon. The trophy has been on display in the convention’s Hugo Award history exhibit since shortly after the convention’s Opening Ceremonies.

While the Hugo Award trophy always includes the rocket originally designed by Jack McKnight and Ben Jason as refined by Peter Weston, each year’s Worldcon can design its own base. In recent years, most Worldcons have had an open design competition to design the Hugo Award base. This year’s trophy base designer Vincent Villafranca appeared in the Opening Ceremony and unveiled the trophy there.

The 2013 Hugo Awards will be presented at a ceremony in San Antonio on the evening of Sunday, September 1, 2013, starting at 8 PM CDT. The ceremony will be broadcast live on Ustream and described on the Hugo Awards web site as a CoverItLive Broadcast.

2013 Hugo Awards Ceremony to be Broadcast Live

LoneStarCon 3, the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, in partnership with Ustream, will broadcast the 2013 Hugo Awards Ceremony live and advertising-free on Sunday, September 1, 2013.

The ceremony will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Rivercenter hotel in downtown San Antonio, starting at 8 PM Central Daylight Time (9 PM EDT, 6 PM PDT). LoneStarCon 3 Toastmaster Paul Cornell, himself a past Hugo Award winner and multiple Hugo Award nominee, will host the ceremony.

In addition to the live video broadcast via Ustream at, the official Hugo Awards site will provide live text-only (lower bandwidth required) coverage via CoverItLive. As in previous years, the CoverItLive event will be hosted by former Worldcon Co-Chairman Kevin Standlee and two-time Campbell Award Nominee Mur Lafferty.

LoneStarCon 3 has partnered with Ustream, the leading video technology platform for live business communications, to provide this exclusive, ad-free broadcast, enabling science fiction fans around the world to participate in this prestigious event without interruption. This means that issue with automated ‘bots that affected last year’s broadcast has been dealt with, and the ceremony is a “whitelisted” event on Ustream.

LoneStarCon 3 previously announced an all-time record of 1,343 nominating ballots, highlighting the ever-increasing interest in and support for the Hugo Awards.

The Hugo Awards will be announced at a ceremony at LoneStarCon 3 in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, September 1, beginning at 8 PM Central Daylight Time.

Hugo Award Voting Closed

Voting for the 2013 Hugo Awards is now closed. The winners will be announced at the Hugo Awards Ceremony at LoneStarCon 3, the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, on Sunday, September 1, 2013. According to the LoneStarCon 3 web site, the convention is finalizing plans to show the Hugo Awards Ceremony by video streaming and to also provide lower-bandwidth plain-text coverage, with details to be announced in early August. Hugo Voting Deadline Approaches

The deadline for voting for the 2013 Hugo Awards is fast approaching. LoneStarCon 3 must receive your ballot by Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 23:59 (11:59 PM) Central Daylight Time. Note that the deadline is in Central Daylight Time (Texas time). Don’t miss out on voting because you didn’t realize the deadline wasn’t in your zone’s time and missed it by an hour or two. Even better, vote a few days before the deadline so that if your internet connection goes down at the last minute, you don’t miss out on voting.

See the Hugo Awards Page at the LoneStarCon 3 web site for details on how to vote. Even if you’re not yet a member of LoneStarCon 3, it’s still not too late to join as at least a supporting member and cast your vote on this year’s Awards.

2013 Hugo Base Designer Announced

Texas-based artist Vincent Villafranca will design the 2013 Hugo Award trophy base, according to an announcement from LoneStarCon 3, the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention. LSC3’s announcement goes on to say that Villafranca is a Chesley Award-winning sculptor who produces futuristic and fantastic bronzes using a traditional lost-wax casting process.

In keeping with tradition, the actual design of the 2013 Hugo Award base will not be reveled until the convention. A photo gallery of past Hugo Award trophy designs is on the Hugo Awards web site.

The Hugo Award trophy consists of a base designed by each year’s Worldcon with a gleaming rocketship of standard design mounted on it. The original rocket design by Jack McKnight and Ben Jason has in recent years been standardized by Peter Weston.

2013 Hugo Award final ballot voting, including the online ballot, is currently underway and will continue through July 31, 2013.
