4032 valid nominating ballots (4015 electronically-submitted and 17 paper) were received and counted. Members of the 2015, 2016, and 2017 Worldcons as of the end of January 2016 were eligible to make up to five equally-weighted nominations in each category. 3,130 valid final ballots were cast by the members of MidAmeriCon II.

Decisions regarding eligibility are made by the current year’s Hugo Administration Subcommittee, whose decisions are final in all cases.

  1. What is the difference between a ‘novella’ and a ‘novelette’? May I submit a work of short stories that includes a fantasy short story, separately. Would I then have to ensure that the book is published by one of your approved publishers? The other stories are neither sci-fi nor fantasy.

    1. See our discussion of the Hugo Award categories for more information. Novellas are works between 17,500 and 40,000 words long. Novelettes are works between 7,500 and 17,500 words long.

      You cannot “submit” a work for consideration. See Submitting Your Work for more information.

      There is no list of “approved publishers.” It doesn’t matter who publishes the work. All works of SF/F in any format from any publisher (including self-published works) are eligible for the Hugo Awards.

      It does not matter if the work of SF/F was published in a collection of other works that was not SF/F.

  2. How are “Erin Dies Alone” and “Full Frontal Nerdity” eligible? These are ongoing series. How is the Castalia House blog eligible? It is a professional magazine.

  3. I love to read books by NAOMI NOVIK. Once you pick up her books you can’t put it down. I love the TEMERAIRE BOOKS. You felt like you were with the dragons. Thank you for the honor you have given NOMI NOVIK .

  6. “Space Raptor Butt Invasion by Chuck Tingle (Amazon Digital Services)” is not published by Amazon, it is self-published. Amazon Digital Services is just an outlet for authors to sell their work.
